Middle East News – May 24th

– The elections in Egypt are nearing there end amid intense speculation of the legality of the elections and the eventual outcome which will affect the entire Middle East – CNN

– A Palestinian led book festival was allowed to enter into the Gaza Strip by the Egyptian government after five years of unsuccessfully attempting to hold their festival there – CNN

– Recent diplomatic talks between Iran and the UN (and the EU) have increased optimism that conflict with Iran will be avoided for the next year at least – CNN

– Assad of Syria has admitted that his regime is losing the ‘information war’ against the West, meaning that the rebels are gaining momentum – BBC

– While most organizations praised the democratic revolutions of the Arab spring the United States government released its annual human rights report that called the revolution ‘destabilizing’  and questioned their results – CNN
