Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Undergraduate & Graduate Fellowships: Summer Intensive Language Study (2010)

FLAS Fellowships are funded by the U.S. Department of Education to encourage area and international studies and to stimulate foreign language acquisition and fluency.

Fellowship Details:*

• Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. • FLAS recipients must be full-time undergraduate or graduate students; applications from students in professional fields are encouraged. • Academic Year FLAS recipients must take at least one area studies course and one language course each semester. • Summer awards (graduate and professional school students only) can be used for intensive language study in programs that last for at least 6 weeks and provide the equivalent of a full academic year of language study. • Applicants for undergraduate fellowships (academic-year awards only) must be at the intermediate or advanced stages of language study (at least the third-year university level); not all languages may be eligible for undergraduate FLAS awards; consult the relevant area studies program for guidelines. • Graduate fellowships cover the full cost of tuition and provide a stipend; undergraduate fellowships provide a partial tuition payment, as well as a stipend.

Eligible Languages (note that some may only be offered in summer):

Akan/Twi, Arabic, Bengali, Burmese, Chinese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Greek, modern Filipino (Tagalog), Finnish, French, German, Hebrew, modern Hindi, Hmong, Icelandic, Indonesian, Irish, modern Italian, Japanese, Javanese, Kazak, Khmer, Lao, Korean, Norwegian, Pashto, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Quechua, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish, Telugu, Thai, Tibetan, Turkish (Azeri), Urdu, Vietnamese, Yoruba, Yucatec, Maya, Zulu
